Synchronizing MySQL data to Elasticsearch using Logstash

Tech/Domain: Technology Stack Problem Statement: Searching data is an expensive affair and most important part of any application. With traditional architectures and single relational databases, fast-pace searching and analysis of data is very challenging. Challenge: E-commerce Websites started building their core business functionalities around MySQL with lesser products. Search functionality was achieved by using MySQL’s FULLTEXT. As the company grew more and more products started entering into the database, and thus started the need to support more search with better options. But then searches started to become slower and slower, which irritated their customers and made it hard to convince new prospects to buy in. Looking under the hood, the engineers realize that MySQL’s FULLTEXT indexes are not ideal for text look-ups on large datasets, and in order to scale up their operations, the engineers decide to move on to a more dedicated and battle-tested text search engine. To work on the solution to this problem, we thought of implementing CQRS approach. What is CQRS??? Command query responsibility segregation (CQRS) is an application architecture pattern. This pattern is often used in event driven applications and is frequently associated with event sourcing. It consists of separating the logic that handles commands from the logic that handles queries. In essence, the CQRS pattern is simply separating the command and query sides. For this we would have to segregate the data writes to MySQL and use Elasticsearch for reading data, and thus achieve a blazing-fast full-text search. But a new challenge then came in: How to get the data that is in a MySQL database into an Elasticsearch index, and how to keep the latter synchronized with the former? The Solution: Using Logstash to periodically fetch data from MySQL, and mirror it on to Elasticsearch. This will take into consideration any changes on the MySQL data records, such as create, update, and delete, and have the same replicated on Elasticsearch documents. Benefits of Solution: – We will create triggers on the table books that will populate a journal table books_journal with all changes on the books table (e.g. create , update , delete ). This means that whenever a record on the books table is created, updated, or deleted, this action will be recorded on the books_journal table, and the same action will be done on the corresponding Elasticsearch document. We will use the books_journal table to update of the Elasticsearch index. Business Outcome Prerequisites: – Full source code can be found on GitHub Steps: – version: ‘3’ services: mysql: image: mysql:latest container_name: mysql ports: – 3306:3306 environment: MYSQL_ROOT_PASSWORD: “root” MYSQL_DATABASE: “elastic” MYSQL_USER: “elastic” MYSQL_PASSWORD: “elastic” volumes: – ./data/:/docker-entrypoint-initdb.d/ elasticsearch: image: docker.elastic.co/elasticsearch/elasticsearch:7.9.3 container_name: elasticsearch ports: – 9200:9200 environment: – discovery.type=single-node – bootstrap.memory_lock=true – “ES_JAVA_OPTS=-Xms512m -Xmx512m” # ELASTIC_PASSWORD: ‘12345’ volumes: – ./volumes/elasticsearch:/usr/lib/elasticsearch/data logging: driver: “json-file” options: max-size: “10k” max-file: “10” kibana: image: docker.elastic.co/kibana/kibana:7.9.3 container_name: kibana environment: – “ELASTICSEARCH_URL=http://elasticsearch:9200” – “SERVER_NAME=127.0.0.1” ports: – 5601:5601 depends_on: – elasticsearch Let’s create a Dockerfile (named Dockerfile-logstash in the same directory) to pull a Logstash image, download the JDBC connector, and start a Logstash container. In your project directory, create a volumes folder (if not already created) then create a directory to host our Logstash configuration: Then in this create a config directory, create a file pipelines.yml containing: – pipeline.id: from-scratch-pipeline path.config: “/usr/share/logstash/pipeline/ pipeline_config.conf” Add a queries folder within it and add following query_books.sql SELECT * FROM elastic.books_journal j LEFT JOIN elastic. books b ON b. books _id= j.product_id WHERE j.journal_id > :sql_last_value AND j.action_time < NOW() ORDER BY j.journal_id And a pipeline directory in which create a file pipeline_config.conf. with the following content: input { jdbc { jdbc_driver_library => “/usr/share/logstash/mysql-connector-java-8.0.22.jar” jdbc_driver_class => “com.mysql.jdbc.Driver” jdbc_connection_string => “jdbc:mysql://mysql:3306” jdbc_user => “elastic” jdbc_password => “elastic” statement_filepath => “/usr/share/logstash/config/queries/query_books.sql” use_column_value => true tracking_column => “journal_id” tracking_column_type => “numeric” schedule => “*/5 * * * * *” } } filter { if [action_type] == “create” or [action_type] == “update” { mutate { add_field => { “[@metadata][action]” => “index” } } } else if [action_type] == “delete” { mutate { add_field => { “[@metadata][action]” => “delete” } } } mutate { remove_field => [“@version”, “@timestamp”, “action_type”] } } output { elasticsearch { hosts => [“http://elasticsearch:9200”] index => “books” action => “%{[@metadata][action]}” document_id => “%{isbn}” } } Once done add following do the docker-compose file to complete Logstash pipeline. logstash: build: context: . dockerfile: Dockerfile-logstash container_name: logstash # restart: on-failure depends_on: – mysql – elasticsearch volumes: – ./volumes/logstash/pipeline/:/usr/share/logstash/pipeline/ – ./volumes/logstash/config/pipelines.yml:/usr/share//logstash/config/pipelines.yml – ./volumes/logstash/config/queries/:/usr/share/logstash/config/queries/ logging: driver: “json-file” options: max-size: “10k” max-file: “10” Understanding the pipeline. The schedule parameter has a cron-like syntax (with a resolution down to the second when adding one more value the left), and uses the Rufus Scheduler behind the scene. Here we instruct Logstash to run this pipeline every 5 seconds with */5 * * * * * . During each periodic run, the parameter tracking_column instructs Logstash to store the journal_id value of the last record fetched and store it somewhere on the filesystem (See documentation here for last_run_metadata_path ). In the following run, Logstash will fetch records starting from journal_id + 1 , where journal_id is the value stored in the current run. Testing We can add, update or delete to the books table and see the changes in ElasticSearch.

TOP ADVANTAGES OF OPTING PYTHON FOR DEVELOPING DYNAMIC PROGRAMMES

In this article I will tell you about top advantage based on my experience on python. I have about 16+ years of experience in the IT industry, with my favourite programming language of Java. During my college day I was fall in love with Java, the after college being an Electronics & Communication Engineering graduate, I decided to pursue my career in Java, so I have opted training in Core Java and J2EE, and we started our first program with Notepad, It was really impossible to write a program in Notepad, you have to take help else it will take a lot of time to fix it. You all these error: MainClass not found No ClassFile found main method not found. Somehow I got expertise on Java, then its J2EE started, that time I was first time exposed of HTML, when I write first program of HTML, then I was really amazed of it, how simple it is, Why not write the whole code in this language only ? Why do we need Java and J2EE things ? The First Top Advantages of Python – Ease to Code Before working on Python will full time on Project, I explore Data Science project in I use python for that, I explore other popular programming language like R also, but found python is easy to learn and Second Top Advantage of Python – Library Available You can find lots of data science libraries available in Python, and just pip install its integrations with your project, and adding libraries in Java is a really painful experience. Adding dependencies in your Java project is very difficult, you need to have dependencies injected in Maven then you need a plug-in you integrate with the project. Third Top Advantage of Python – Virtual Environment As you work on project and you need to test your application with different version of software version, in python its very easy pip install virtualenv How can you do this in Java ? It is achieved by setting a classpath, then using that classpath to involve various manual or setup maven tasks. As I start mentoring junior developers, I see lots of code formatting issues, and we need to depend on linting tools. Forth Top Advantage of Python- Program with Indentation When I started working on python, this feature really amazed me about programs with indentation features that mean if you do not have proper tabs then your program logic will not work. This pushes you right in with proper indentation else your code will not work. As I am getting expertise in Java, I want to code quickly but as a simple task you need to write lots of code and it really hampers your performance. Fifth Top Advantage of Python – Efficiency Python is designed with keeping in mind that developers can be efficited while coding. In java we need to use a new keyword to create an instance, it is simplified with no new keyword in python. Working with Python makes my life very easy. It is important to explore and upgrade your skills, and you can find something which gives you new light and energy to your skills. Some Java Developers may be hurt, it’s not my intention, because Java has their own advantage, if we go for performance based applications with scalability.

Things to avoid while learning to code.

Introduction We live in a world of technology; everywhere you look, you will find a device or tool that uses an algorithm or a program to work. Technology has become a vast, inseparable part of our lives from our phones, smart TVs, watches, and even ovens and washing machines. With technology interwoven with every aspect of our lives, many are curious about the field or understand how things work. Tech as a career path can be very satisfying, lucrative, and exciting. With a tech career, you get the chance to participate in building the future while maintaining the present. That was one of the core ideas that attracted me to this field. Many people every day are considering getting into the tech field, regardless of the exact branch. Whether you are considering being a web dev, an app dev, a data scientist, or even a researcher, the first step you will need to take is to learn to program. Mistakes are an inevitable part of everyone’s life. But, there is no reason to feel afraid or embarrassed by anything you might make. After all, they help us learn better and grow further. The same is applicable for computer programming courses. You will stumble, you will fall, but you will come back better and stronger for it. These are the coding mistakes to be avoided. Memorising syntax This is related to the above mistake, and it’s one I would say is the most mistake done by beginners. So often we try to learn new skills, say programming, we choose a specific language to start with, for example, Python, C++, or Java. Those three programming languages have some commonalities, but their syntax is definitely not identical. So, most of my students try to sit down and memorize the syntax for a specific programming language, memorize the functions, the different ways to do things, and the possible libraries. They think by doing this, and they can efficiently solve any given problem because they can recall all the tools they need. But that’s not true, and it just forces you to think within a box of one programming language. So never memorize syntax; you can definitely Google things if you need to. Avoiding the basics While learning to code, a lot forget that nothing starts big in a day. I have once trapped in this myself at a time. After learning and rushing through just the basics of HTML and CSS, I quickly picked up JavaScript with a course, only to get to know I need to dwell more on HTML/CSS and practice with it before moving to JavaScript itself. No matter which language you’re learning, you have to focus on the basics a lot, so It’d be easy for you to pick up advanced features when necessary. If you want to learn React, Vue, or Angular, strengthen your HTML/CSS, cross over to JavaScript, and know the advanced features, then pick up the framework of your choice. If you want to be a master in Django, then you need to be comfortable with python first. Not Asking for help A lot of beginners in coding and web development often feel ashamed to ask for help. Remember the popular saying that no one is infallible. Personally, I wised up and took my ability to ask for help to the next level when I got to know even senior developers still hop around on google and StackOverflow and won’t discover their programming bugs oftentimes until they tell a colleague to take a look. As a beginner, you need to make Google and StackOverflow your friends, read documentations, ask colleagues and more knowledgeable individuals for help and get a mentor too. Learning Too Many Languages All at Once This section will put a clear emphasis on the idiom — “Jack of all trades and master of none”. Learning different programming languages within various frameworks and attending multiple courses, seminars, and webinars dedicated to all these programming languages will not make you smarter or more knowledgeable. Instead, you will get more and more confused and waste a lot of time and maybe even money and end up learning all these languages in a half-hearted manner. It is a classic case of not having a proper goal or direction to focus your mind on. Blindly copy/pasting code At the beginning of the career, every programmer does that, but this blindly copy/pasting code has to stop eventually. Maybe your creativity is blocked, or you have some other reason for doing that. Nevertheless, you have to understand the code before you reuse it. So, take your time and read the code in detail. Using an overly-complicated language in the beginning Don’t feel pressured to code in a language that you’re intimidated by just because that’s what many others do, and especially don’t code a custom engine. There are multitudes of easy-to-understand languages that are very beginner-friendly. And, once you know one language, it’s very easy to learn any other language. Not utilizing the debugger When you run into a code error that you do not know how to solve, don’t make the mistake of just diving into the code and reading. Use the debugger. Most IDEs have them. With the debugger, it makes solving issues a breeze; you can watch your code run line-by-line, so you can see exactly what’s going wrong.ons.
